Over the years I have been in receipt of, or involved with, several of the Batman fanzines that sporadically come onto the scene. Most are fan produced and spring from a need by that particular fan or group of fans to share their feelings about the character they revere with other like minded individuals. Most too, despite intending more, end up lacking in content and variety, and fizzle out almost as quickly as they came into being.
Every
so often, however, a fanzine comes up that exhibits a bit more
variety, thought and imagination. Perhaps the two best fanzines in
recent years, in my opinion anyway, were Carlos Hernandez’s erstwhile ‘Dark
Sentinel’, and ‘The Batfan Newsletter’ edited by Randy Weiderman.
The Dark Sentinel in particular was heavily weighted in favor of
the written word and many a familiar name in the Batman collecting world
contributed on a regular (or irregular basis).
